Who ever said that dragons aren’t real!?

We have real life dragons in our oceans, not just one, but three species. I would argue they are all equally as beautiful and fascinating as each other.

Each dragon is perfectly adapted to camouflage into their unique environments; the Leafy Seadragon with the most extravagant leaf-like appendages blends in with their kelp and seaweed surrounds, whilst the Weedy Sea Dragon with a more streamlined body is hard to recognise amongst the seagrass beds it is found (trust me I have tried, and am still yet to see one even though I know they are there!), and finally, the lesser known of the three species; the Ruby Sea Dragon. Although it may not appear as though it would be as well camouflaged, (I mean, it doesn’t even have any appendages!?) it is actually a master of disguise in the deeper habitat it is found. Found at depths of around 50meters where red light no longer reaches, the red colouration of its body essentially acts like an invisibiity cloak!

This is just one of the things I find so cool about this group of ocean animals and what draw me to painting them and trying to capture each of their unique qualities to the best of my ability.

I painted each sea dragon as its own painting, but I love putting them together in this scientific illustration poster style to make for a great comparison of their unique features and colours.
