Striped Pyjama Squid 'Sepioloidea lineolata'

Found in shallow, coastal waters from Southern Great Barrier Reef to central South Australia. These little cuties or dumplings (also refered to as dumpling squid) are nocturnal, burying themselves in sand and mud sediments during the day and coming out to feed at night.

A whole lot of dots for a Striped animal!

I wanted to make sure I really captured all of the details of these little dots on the skin of the striped pajama squid because I find these to be such an incredible feature of these animals.
.
The dots I am talking about are actually called chromatophores; specialised organs containing pigment sacs. They are able to make these more visible using small muscles to pull the sac open making the pigment expand under the skin. This gives the striped pajama squid the ability to camouflage itself by changing the colour and pattern of their skin!

Also known as a Dumpling Squid. Which I love, look at this little cute dumpling!
.
Also, to those people that guessed 'cuttlefish' you are infact correct! I got schooled. Despite its name as a Squid, it is in fact a species of CUTTLEFISH! 😅
.
These little guys reach a maximum length of only about 7cm! They are nocturnal, so bury themselves in sand during the day and come out at night to feed.
.
I'm guessing this would make them not the easiest critters to see on a dive. They remain on my bucket list.
.
Also, I said this year was going to be about making art. I'm starting off strong! I hadn't painted since October before this little dude. Getting back into it!
