A reminder of the importance of sharks for shark awareness day!

Sharks have been around a very long time... like.. a VERY long time...even longer than trees have been on this planet! 🤯 They have survived five major extinction events, demonstrating just how resilient and adaptable they can be.
.
Yet today, we are watching their numbers decline in alarming rates due to human impacts like overfishing, bycatch, the shark fin soup trade, pollution and global warming.
.
As apex predators, they play a vital role in keeping our oceans healthy, if we lose them, there will certainly be cascading effects on the rest of the marine ecosystems.
.
An ocean with no sharks would be a scary thought indeed.

A bit of behind the scenes of a painting.

I find this the tedious part where I am eager to just be getting paint to paper! But, this is the most important stage.. if the initial sketch isn't right, the finished painting won't be right either!
.
Sometimes I use this grid system for sketches, often for more complex shapes like the intricate details of a Leafy seadragon.
.
Alternatively if im happy for a bit more of a free flow sketch I like to sketch out on a piece of baking paper first. Then cut out and trace to my watercolour paper. I do this to make sure I center my animal on the page. I actually prefer this method for fun, but it isn't the most accurate. Depends what I'm after from my painting.

My progress over the years!

Does this look like much of an improvement to you or look much of a muchness?
.
To me it is massive! The first weedy seadragon I painted back in 2016. It was the first of my paintings that I ever made a fine art print from. I've been wanting to do another for a long time and it felt good once I finally did to see how far my work has come!
.
The new painting is much more anatomically correct, way more detailed, colours more accurate (although there are variations between each individual dragon) and I also feel it has an element of seemingly less 'flat' too.
.

Dragons are real!! 🌟 🐉

And they sure are magnificent little creatures!
.
Meet the Weedy Seadragon 'Phyllopteryx taeniolatus'
.
These beautiful little fish are members of the family Syngnathidae. The name 'weedy' refers to the 'leaf-like' appendages which are not to be confused with fins! These appendages are actually used just for camouflage, helping them hide amongst seaweed perfectly (so well infact I am still unable to spot them even though I know they are at my local snorkel spot).
.
They do however have two types of fins: a dorsal and pectoral which are both transparent so are often overlooked. The pectoral fins are located on the side of the neck, used for steering and body positioning. The dorsal fin, which is located along the back, is the primary means of propulsion, although they are not strong swimmers.
.
The species is endemic to Australian temperate waters. It occurs from the central New South Wales coast around the south coast of Australia to south-western Western Australia.
.
