The Ruby Sea Dragon ‘Phyllopteryx dewysea’
Named after its beautiful ruby red colour, the ruby sea dragon is probably the lesser known of the three sea dragon species, and although it does not possess appendages like the others, I think it is equally as beautiful. They are found at depths of about 50 meters making them not as likely to be encountered and was the reason why they remained elusive for so long.
This also meant that painting one had its challenges! Reference photos are much more limited as divers aren’t able to encounter and photograph them. So my references were a mix of photos of dead specimens that had washed up on shore, skeletons, 3D models and one poor quality live footage. It made for a challenging but fun exercise to try and piece it together and I think it resulted in the painting having a somewhat vintage scientific illustration feel that I rather like!
