Wow guys, this has been an absolutely incredible challenge! Thank you to each and every artist out there that shared their work to tell the stories of our oceans! Thank you to @oceanculturelife for their continued work sharing the stories of the sea!

Art is such a powerful tool to communicate and educate on important issues & this challenge has done just that! I for one have learnt so much from everyone's beautiful pieces and information to go with them!

I hope you can all say the same!

'Stuck in Traffic'
.
I wanted to tell the often over-looked story behind consumerism.
Based on slide #4: a visual animation of a tracked blue whale trying to feed in an area of high level boat traffic (Image credit: Luis Bedriñana-Romano).
.
Researchers discovered that blue whales could encounter as many as 1,000 vessels per day in the study area.
.
The impacts of increased shipping traffic on whales are:
.
🚢 Noise Pollution:
Whales rely on sound for communication and navigation, and loud, persistent noise can disrupt these critical behaviors, leading to stress, disorientation, and even hearing damage.
.
🚢 Ship Strikes:
Ship strikes can result in fatal injuries or mortality, especially for larger, slower whales like blue whales and whale sharks.
Some studies suggest that ship strikes are a leading cause of human-induced mortality for certain whale populations.

🚢 Behavioral Changes:
Whales may exhibit behavioral changes in response to increased shipping traffic, such as changes in their migration patterns or feeding behavior.
Some whales may avoid areas with heavy shipping traffic, potentially impacting their access to food or breeding grounds.
Others may become habituated to ships, increasing their risk of collision.

In today's society of fast fashion, extremely cheap sites like Temu and the availability of products at our finger tips this is an ever growing problem. Would people reconsider a purchase if they knew it came at the cost of a life of a whale? Would the product really be so essential then?
.

On my folks block there is charred tree providing the goods with a whole heap of charcoal. So I've been using it to create some little Australian bird art.
.
This little guy hiding in a hollow is a Tawny Frog Mouth. Which there's actually a couple of these that live in the next tree over to this one.
.
Love making art spontaneously! Have you got a spontaneous art practice that you do? Found any wakey materials to use?

Oh and yes my 3 year old helped out with some of the beautiful scribbled bark lines underneath 😆

Humpback whales provide us with a story of resilience, a beacon of hope, a reminder that if given the chance, life in our oceans will bounce back and thrive once again.
.
Humpbacks were once hunted and nearly wiped off the face of this planet. In the late 1950's it was estimated that their population had declined to a mere 1.6 percent of their original numbers, leaving just 440 remaining south of the equator. It was a very close reality for you and I to have never seen one of these beauties!
.
Thankfully, change was made at a critical moment for these animals. Whaling was banned and as a direct result, humpback populations increased and rebounded. Today, it is estimated that there are between 120,000 - 150,000 Humpbacks in our oceans around the world.
.
Their story shows us that if we act, and act fast, we have the power to make positive changes.
.
Watching these beauties living such peaceful lives; flipping, twisting, playing it appears as if they are dancing with happiness just to be here, existing.
.

The tshirts are heavy weight, 100% cotton, unisex shirts. Choose your sizing based on how you like your tee's to fit; regular, relaxed or oversized.

I am normally a size 8/small in tops, but I would probably size up to a Medium for a more relaxed fit. Or if I was looking for an oversized fit I'd go 2 sizes up to a Large!

Prompt #3 - 'Stories of the Frozen Seas'
This is my fun piece- 'Always be a Unicorn'

My piece is based on a true story of a narwhal that seemingly has been adopted by a pod of belugas! The narwhal was first spotted with the belugas by scientists in 2016 and appears to be 'behaving like one of the boys' - Robert Michaud, GREMM's president and scientific director.
He's just become one of the lads 😅
.
Belugas and narwhals belong to the same cetacean family, Monodontidae but rarely interact in the wild, so it is surprising to researchers how the narwhal joined the pod.
Both species are found in the Arctic Ocean. However, belugas will migrate farther south in the winter when sea ice forms, while narwhals stay in the Arctic and spend up to five months under ice-covered waters. Perhaps this 'dude' just decided that living under ice just wasn't for him?
.
Researchers suspect breeding is a possibility because of how bonded the narwhal is to the pod of belugas. Which would give rise to a hybrid species known as a Narluga 🤯 which in 2019 DNA analysis of an odd cetacean skull confirmed the existence of such an animal!
.
