Here is a painting of a piece of seagrass and algae.... or is it!??? 😝

Well, there is definitely a piece of seagrass (posidonia australis) and a piece of algae (halimeda opuntia) here. But there are also two species of ghost pipefish! The Halimeda Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus halimeda) and the Robust Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus cyanopterus).
.
I have a real fascination of adaptations of animals that allow them to so beautifully mimic their surroundings to give them an almost perfect disguise! These two are fabulous at it!
.
As it's name implies, the Halimeda Ghost pipefish very closely resembles the algae Halimeda. It's disguise goes as far as being covered in fine 'hair-like' filaments that match the appearance of epiphytic growth on the Halimeda algae! I mean.. how bloody cool is that!?
.
The Robust Ghost Pipefish does a brilliant job of mimicking a piece of floating seagrass! They float nearly motionless, with their mouths facing downwards, often found in pairs they seem to seamlessly move together to replicate the movement of floating seagrass amongst a background that makes them nearly impossible to see!

It's all in the little details. Eye patches, dorsal fin shape and size, saddle patches, a few teenie tiny scratches and scars I managed to pull from reference photos.

This is what I focused my attention on in trying to recreating Hook and Augie as realistically as I could. I even used their actual measurements from in the field to get their sizing just right in proportion to one another too!

Meet 'Hook & Augie'
.
This was a really special piece created for the lead researcher at CETREC (cetacean research centre) who spent years alongside these particular Orca's out in the field, getting to know them and their personalities and characteristics so well- leading to a very hard task of recreating their features spot on to make sure they were recognisable!
.
Hook (top) - the ultimate matriarch of the region, was about 40-50 years old. Getting her name from her defining hook shaped fin.
Augie (bottom)- her son, around about a 20 year old Bull. Known to be very interactive with the researchers, always coming to say hello as they watched him grow from a juvenile into the massive Bull with his impressively large dorsal!
.
The painting brief was to ensure all of the key defining features the researchers use in the field for identifying individuals were spot on. In particular their eyes patches, dorsal fins and saddle patches which are characteristically light in the tropics.

Oooo big call being the cutest shark! There are some strong contenders out there, Shy Sharks, Port Jacksons, Blue sharks, Leopard sharks buttt the Thresher Sharks with their cartoonishly large eyes and their faces that look like they have just been told some shockingly juicy gossip are right up there in my opinion!
.
The anatomy of a thresher shark is believe it or not, not just for cuteness. They are perfectly adapted as strong ocean predators. Their large eyes are adapted to low light conditions for hunting, their streamlined bodies making them one of the fastest sharks in the ocean and lets not forget their unique looonnnggg tails which they use like a whip to create shock waves that stun their prey and also can be used to propel them completely out of water making them one of the few sharks that breach!

Frilled pygmy octopus ' Octopus superciliosus'

There is very little known about this elusive species as most specimens have been collected by shallow water trawls and encounters of these octopus in the wild are extremely rare, with only two confirmed wild sightings. Only one of which was captured beautifully on video by @emilymaydive on the Mornington Peninsula, Australia.
.
As with other pygmy species , their small size makes them difficult to spot, which they would use to their advantage to avoid predation by hiding in seaweed and seagrass habitats. They have a maximum size of just 9cm.

A work in progress!

Coming up is the frilled pygmy octopus 🐙
.
This one has been a unique challenge working with Orange and Red tones compared to my more comfortable palette of blues and greys. This may be a large reason why it's taken me a while to tackle the cephalopods. Their colours are sooo varied, each one seems so challenging!
.
But im feeling more confident in my abilities to try and capture their many pigment changing beautiful bodies now, and hopefully can do them justice. So expect a lot more cephalopods from me this year!
.
